Natural Sleep Aid for Insomniacs

By: Cristel Lumabas

Insomnia afflicts millions of people around the world. Sleeplessness is a major disorder that disrupts a person’s daily routine at home and at work. A person with a sleeping disorder usually feels tired, irritable, and lacks the ability to concentrate. To address their difficult condition, most people often opt to take chemical-based medications to help them get much-needed sleep. Insomniacs often use a variety of sleeping aids such as Lunesta or one of the other current pharmaceutical sleeping aids that are being advertised on television. In reality, if natural sleep aids are used properly, they can be just as effective or perhaps, even more effective than those available at the local pharmacy.

A natural sleep aid is a viable alternative to most commercially available pharmaceutical products. Using an all-natural product would also get rid of any anxiety or apprehension about possible side effects.

But aside from taking all-natural products for treating insomnia, people with sleeping problems should also address the common-sense details of their condition. How do you go to bed at night? Do you lie down in a dark room, or do you watch television for a while to unwind and eventually feel sleepy? The best bedtime rituals are quick and relaxing and lead directly to one sleeping in a darkened, quiet bed. Noise from the television or the radio would not make one fall asleep, and is unlikely to help in getting over insomnia.

Even if one has healthy bedtime habits, but still needs help sleeping, then herbal sleeping aids may be a good place to start. Lemon balm, valerian, peppermint leaves, and St. John’s Wort are all excellent natural sleep aids. Drinking them in tea form would be recommended, as hot liquids can also help one get to sleep, but St. John's Wort and other remedies are often available as capsules or tablets. St. John’s Wort is known to be one of the strongest available herbal remedies around, and acts on depression and many other serious psychiatric disorders. Lavender, on the other hand, is considered to be very mild, but its scent is one of the best natural sleep aids available to many others. Try to keep a record of what sleeping aids were used, and note which ones have an effect and which ones don’t. Through trial and error, you’ll identify the best natural sleep aids that would work for you.

Just in case, no matter what mild sleeping aid medications one uses, it is important to let the doctor know about this, and inform them during consultations. Even mild herb medications can have a serious drug interaction with other prescription medications, so being careful is another step towards successful insomnia treatment. Most natural sleeping aids do not act very quickly and would require a “loading period” during which the concentration of the drug builds in the bloodstream before it shows any effect.
