The secrets to agoraphobia

By: Thomas Bronson

Many of us have heard of mental disorders, and most of us think that only certain people become afflicted with these conditions. However this is simply not the case. Mental disorders include panic attacks, anxiety disorders and social anxieties as well. These attacks can range from mild discomfort to debilitating agoraphobia and this is a condition that can strike anyone.

One day you are going about your daily routine and everything seems normal, but suddenly without any forewarning, there is a sudden feeling of overwhelming fear in your mind. The fearful feeling has left your body feeling feeble and vulnerable to anything that is around you. You find yourself breathing very hard for air and your heart is beating at a faster rate than normal. The first thing that comes to your mind is that you are suffering from a heart attack because the symptoms match the illness. You are left dumbfounded when the doctor tells you there is nothing wrong with your body that might lead you to suffer those problems earlier.

When the symptoms strike you but you find out that you are not suffering from heart attack, then you cannot stop thinking what actually is wrong with yourself. As time passes, you might slowly realize that in certain situation or condition do these symptoms and dread attacks appear and this is the first step towards realizing what is causing these attacks. One has to understand that these attacks do not happen physically, and that is why the physicians and doctors are having difficulties trying to diagnose the problem.

So, what is agoraphobia you might ask? This is a condition where an individual doesnt wish to go places or face situations where they could become exposed to panic attacks. The very word agoraphobia itself lets us know the nature of this debilitating condition. Agora comes from the Greek language and it means places where people meet, or a marketplace. Phobia is a fear of something. Thus we can understand that people who suffer from agoraphobia have a fear of being in crowded places.

Agoraphobia is a condition that develops gradually. In general it occurs after a panic attack. After the first attack you may subconsciously be preparing for another attack and fearing the symptoms that will leave you feeling helpless. This cycle of panic attack and impending panic attack can cause you to change your entire lifestyle just to avoid those feelings of terror. As panic attacks can occur anywhere at anytime, we generally associate the first place that we feel helpless as perhaps the reason for our terror.

An Agoraphobia patient would do anything possible to prevent themselves from going to certain places which create conditions where they feel would cause another impending attack. As the situation worsens, they would avoid more and more places and in the end they would rather stay at home all day rather than going out for a while. As a result, this detrimental action would backfire since we are locked up all day long in the house. After certain period of time, we would suffer anxiety attacks even when trying to do normal daily routines outside the house. One of the symptoms of the attack, the fast heart rate, would also cause a serious problem for the individual because we think we are suffering from heart failure or heart attack.

After reading through this article, now you might realize how dangerous and harmful the anxiety attack problems can be. In order to prevent further harm, individuals who suffer from the illness should go look for advice and consultation with the doctors as soon as possible and get treated before it becomes serious. Then, you cannot help but to restrain yourself from going out of the house because everyday your fear of going out into crowded places keeps you there.
