What Is Eating Disorders Bulimia About

By: Kerris Samson

Yes, we all have heard of anorexia and it is now the most commonly recognized of all eating disorders by the medical community. But for those that suffer from the eating disorder known as Bulimia it is important that they same emphasis is placed on treating it as anorexia. For many eating disorders, bulimia included their are many health problems associated with them.

In some cases there are bulimics (sufferers of bulimia) who prefer to restrict the amount of food they consume as an anorexic does. But in the majority of cases when a person has the eating disorder bulimia what they prefer to do is consume and then try a number of different methods in order to expel it from their bodies after they have eaten it.

But bulimia should not be mistaken for binge eating. Rather what a bulimic person prefers to do is eat food as they would normally and then attempt to get rid of it. They will either induce themselves to vomit or they will use laxatives.

The biggest problem faced both by those close to a sufferer of a bulimia or by a medical professional is actually recognizing that they have the condition in the first case. With anorexia and binge eating people will see that the person's weight changes dramatically. But with bulimia there may be no difference in their weight, although for some they may be overweight.

As with all eating disorders each one can cause seriously health problems to the sufferer. With bulimia those that choose to remove the food they have eaten through self-induced vomiting are placing considerable amounts of strain on to their heart and other major organs within the body.

But as well as vomiting, laxatives can have a serious effect on the body. Both of these methods can actually result in a person not getting sufficient amounts of nutrients which helps to make sure that their body functions properly. Certainly if vomiting or use of laxatives carries on for any length of time this could actually become a life threatening condition to the sufferer.

As with all forms of eating disorders as well as trying to get the sufferer to eat a much more healthy diet, underlying psychological problems will need to be treated as well. The problem is that for those people who are diagnosed with suffering from anorexia nervosa are also at a greater risk of developing bulimia as well. So through the treatment of the psychological problems associated with these disorders can often help to prevent the conditions from becoming far worse.

Where bulimia is concerned in a large number of cases those who know the person will not realize that they are bulimic, simply because they see that they are eating. However, by actually understanding that these people are extremely secretive about expelling food from their body will then they be able to get them the professional help that they need for treating such eating disorders like bulimia.
