You Are Not Alone There Are Famous People With Eating Disorders

By: Allison Thompson

Today not only are famous people affected with eating disorders but the normal people are as well. Yet when people think of famous people with eating disorders the name that springs to most peoples minds is that of Karen Carpenter, who suffered from anorexia.

Through the 1970's and up until the early part of the 1980's Karen along with her brother Richard were very famous for their singing abilities. However what many people did not realize that at the height of their fame Karen was battling with anorexia. It was only after she died in 1983 at the age of 32 did it come to light that she had suffered from this particular eating disorder.

As with all anorexia sufferers because they choose to not eat correctly or sufficient amounts of food they actually put large amounts of strain on to their body. Karen Carpenter actually suffered a heart attack and this was the main cause of her death.

At the time of Karen's premature death very people knew or understood the complications or seriousness of this particular eating disorder. But it certainly provided many people with a wake up call and made them far more aware of the danger's that this and other eating disorders can place on their health. Yet there are still people who do not understand the seriousness of eating disorders today.

In fact very little is still being done to educate those who suffer from the conditions, or those that do not. Rather what many people would rather do is sweep the problem under the mat and forgets that there is one.

Along with anorexia today eating disorders such as bulimia and binge eating are becoming far more prevalent in our modern societies. Simply because people are trying to convey an image that they think people want to see. But the truth is with any eating disorder a person is actually placing considerable strain on to their bodies and this includes their heart. Over time because they do not get the right balance of nutrients in their body in order for it to function correctly they become much weaker and eventually they may find that their body just simply can not function any longer.

The only real way that a person can actually help himself or herself to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control is by admitting first to themselves that they have a problem. Once they are able to do this then they should be able to admit to others and get the necessary help that they need. The problem though is a lot of people with eating disorders feel that they have control over the situation and so are unwilling to accept that they may have a problem.

So really it is not just famous people with eating disorders today, in fact it can affect just about anyone. Today although it is more prevalent in women and young girls it can effect men as well. Plus since the death of Karen Carpenter today more and more people not only in the medical community but outside it have started to take these eating disorders much more seriously than they would have been 30 years ago.
